Why ‘shop’ for books on Kickstarter?
I’ll do a longer post about this later with more examples. IMHO, Kickstarter is one of the best things to happen to readers — especially fantasy readers — in a long time!
It’s such a wonderful (and underutilized!!) spot for readers to find new books.
Basically, Kickstarter is a pop-up bookstore FILLED with treasures… the closest I’ve ever felt to mimicking that Scholastic-bookstore feeling in an online setting.
You can find books and merch you’d never find elsewhere.
You can cut through the noise to find new authors who are doing wonderful and interesting things!
And you can support authors you already love, too!
Kickstarter is NOT...
A charity. Creators on Kickstarter are looking to crowdfund new products like brand new books, hardcover editions, special editions, audiobooks — and more!
If the campaign doesn’t reach its funding goal, backers won’t be charged.

1. Explore a campaign
My dear friend JR Szpila has agreed to let me use her newly launched campaign for Spitarian Series Epic Fantasy Hardcovers as an example.
Maybe your favorite author is running a campaign, or maybe one showed up on your social media feed.
It looks great. You want to do more.
First, you’ll want to check out the story section. This is where all your questions will be answered:
- What’s the book about?
- What editions are available here?
- What kinds of extras are available?
- What’s the timeline?
- Are there any stretch goals if the author breezes past their funding goal?
You’ll find all this information in the story section!
2. Explore Reward Tiers
It’s not just a choice between ebooks, paperbacks, and hardcovers.
You’ll find all those things with Kickstarter — and more.
You’ll also find beautiful special editions, custom artwork, stickers, tote bags, mugs, and everything your fandom-loving heart could possibly want.
3. Choose Your Reward
Once you’ve decided to back a campaign, the next step is to choose your reward level.
You’ll even have a chance to add more books and swag!
